The Iliad and Odyssey Complete Set by Memoria Press, is a great way to study two of the most influential books from Ancient Greece!
The Iliad and The Odyssey, by Homer, are classic works of literature that every student should be familiar with. These epic poems have helped to shape our view of Ancient Greece and greatly influenced modern literature.
For this review, Memoria Press generously provided my family with both of the complete sets for The Iliad and The Odyssey.
What are the Iliad and Odyssey Complete Set?
The Iliad and The Odyssey by Homer have had a huge impact on modern literature. Even Shakespeare read and incorporated themes from these books into his works. The nature of war, fighting, and love is seen through the eyes of brave men who struggle against impossible odds.
Memoria Press’s Iliad and Odyssey Complete Set is a great way to study these works in a classical Christian education style. I, myself, lean toward a Montessori teaching style for younger students, but this classical curriculum set was just what we needed for my oldest son!
What is included in The Iliad and Odyssey Complete Set?
The Iliad and Odyssey Complete Set includes:
The Student Study Guide
The consumable student study guide for grades 7-12 includes a wide range of information such as comprehension questions, which cover both recall and higher order thinking skills.
My son, Josh, appreciated the character identification guide to help him remember who everyone was.
Quotes illustrate the plot and themes of the chapter and bring out quality literature essentials that can be used to increase writing skills.
The appendix includes helpful reference information such as charts of genealogies, alternative names of the characters, weaponry, ship terminology, and more.
The Teacher Guide is a valuable resource. Packed with background information, points to bring up for discussion, and essay ideas, it was a great resource for me.
The Teacher Notes helped me to organize my thoughts, and focus on important aspects of the stories.
In the back of the Teacher Guide, are the student tests to help teachers know if students are ready to move on to the next chapters. Some questions are fill in the black, multiple choices, vocabulary definitions, and identifying characters.
The unabridged epic poems written in prose
The books are beautifully printed in a print that is easy to read. With room to take notes in the margins, it is a great copy for studying.
The DVDs provide a classroom feel to the Iliad and Odyssey Complete Set. Josh described the teacher, Mr. Brooks, as funny and easy going. High praise from a teenager!
Mr. Brooks highlights the key concepts and themes while explaining the sometimes-confusing characters and side plots.
How did our family use the Iliad and Odyssey Complete Set?
Before Memoria Press’s study, I thought of The Iliad as the story of the Trojan War. But really it is the story of the anger of Achilles. It had been so long since I read The Odyssey, I had forgotten the crazy adventure of it. I had so much fun reading these books with my son Josh! I had a lot to relearn myself.
At times, I read the books aloud to all three of my sons. Other times, Josh wanted to finish the chapters on his own so that he could read through the exciting parts more quickly. I found myself enjoying reading ahead.
My younger sons enjoyed the stories as well. It was a little confusing at times, but I really wanted them to have a grasp of the overall themes and characters to lay a foundation for further reading.
The battles and war strategies were definitely a hit for boys.
