Review of Glacers, A Lion’s World, and There Once Was a Cowpoke Who Swallowed an Ant

Our family received three engaging media enhanced books, Glacers, A Lion’s World, and There Once Was a Cowpoke Who Swallowed an Ant from Weigl Publishers.

Who are Weigl Publishers?

Weigl Publishers has over 450 books to read online complete with vides, interactive maps, and weblinks. I would recommend them for elementary age students. They are very easy to access with your own personal code. You can enjoy them on computers or other tablets. Each book is purchased without a subscription, so you have access to it indefinately. Prices range from $12 to $35 and you can download or view their catelog online.

The books include National and State Standards Curriculum Correlations. The Teacher and Parent portion of Weigl’s website gives ideas on how to incorporate their books into your current curriculum.

What kinds of books does Weigl Publishers offer?

Weigl Publishers offers four collections.

The Let’s Read Collection if for recommended for K-2 students. Topics included animals, dinosaurs, states, insects, machines, my neighborhood, and science. There are over 130 titles to choose from!

The Science Collection was our favorite. It is recommended for older elementary students and includes topic such as animals, earth science, the solar system, ecosystems, science discovery topics, and the wonders of the world.

The Social Studies Collection offers a well-rounded group of books that cover topics such as states, continents, American history, cultures, great African Americans, and history makers.

The High Interest Collection focuses on sports and recreational topics.

What is A Lion’s World like?

A Lion’s World is from the Let’s Read Collection. Each page has a beautiful video of lions in action. We could see lions like we have never seen them before: close up and personal. It was great! Large arrows on the pages allowed by first grade son to turn the pages easily. The videos repeated until he turned the page. This was helpful because he wanted to watch the video first, then read about it. The text was perfect for K-2 students. They could listen to the book being read to them or read it themselves. My sons loved getting so close to lions in their natural habitats!

What is There Once Was a Cowpoke Who Swallowed an Ant like?

Modeled after There Was an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Fly, this poor Cowpoke keeps swallowing animals until he is full to bursting. So he goes into his own stomach to rope the animals and chase them out. Silly! The engaging pictures have lots of character. Students can read the book themselves or listen to it read aloud. The rhyming text is highlighted so they can follow along as it is read. Beginning with an ant and ending with a longhorn, this book will tickle your tummy!

What is Glaciers like?

This was my sons’ favorite of the books. Complete with videos, amazing pictures, diagrams, and maps, it taught us much about glaciers. It was scientificaly written and included a quiz at the end in the bonus activites. An experiment wrapped it up that showed how water levels rise as glaciers melt.

One part we didn’t appreciate was that the timeline of glacier formation and movement was based on a millions of years worldview. As young Earth creationionists, we would have loved to see an alternative timeline.

Our family’s thoughts on the Weigl books

The books were fun and interactive and the glacier videos were amazing. When I was a classroom teacher, I would have jumped at these resources. Teachers can meet the needs of many students with one book.

The prices are similar to print books, so as a homeschool mom I am most interested in the science, American history, and states books. Since I can purchase the book once and read it as many times as I want, it is a great deal. The video and weblinks add so much information that you can’t enjoy in a print book. Plus, it doesn’t take up space on my already packed shelves and I can take it anywhere my tablet goes. I would much rather have these books for my kids while traveling or waiting somewhere than a digital game!

So check them out. You will be glad you did!
