What is Persuasive Writing & Classical Rhetoric: Practicing the Habits of Great Writers?

The goal of this homeschool writing curriculum is for students, ages 14-18, to be great writers. Writers do not only write. They read and think as well. Silverdale Press LLC has masterfully designed Persuasive Writing & Classical Rhetoric around these three skills.

Why is it important for our students to learn rhetoric and persuasive writing?

When we hear the word “rhetoric,” we often think of something negative. But that is not what true rhetoric is. To quote from the curriculum, “Rhetoric is skillful and artistic communication that aims to persuade an audience.”

Rhetoric is practical; it influences others. Rhetoric teaches you to think before you speak. It can give you the courage to debate and discuss topics while stating your position on difficult questions. Rhetoric can also help you resist when someone is trying to talk you into something that is not good for you.

What is included in Persuasive Writing & Classical Rhetoric: Practicing the Habits of Great Writers?

Included in the curriculum are four books.

The Lesson Book leads parents and writers through the 36 lessons. Each of which begins with goals and a weekly schedule. This was great, since it allowed Josh and me to have a clear direction to head toward. Josh and I so enjoyed reading the profiles of great and historic writers.

The Workbook is for students. It has comprehension questions about the lesson and about the readings. It contains the weekly writing prompt and vocabulary review.

The Reader contains the writings of world changers and heroes that have accomplished great things through their speaking and writing. By reading these examples, students become better writers themselves.

The Answer Key holds rubrics to evaluate student writing along with answers to the comprehension questions and vocabulary reviews. It defines the key terms and gives examples of how to use them.

How did our family use Persuasive Writing & Classical Rhetoric: Practicing the Habits of Great Writers?

Josh and I worked through the first 7 lessons together. We covered topics such as Habits of Great Writers, how to come up with a great subject to discuss, Winston Churchill, how to gather information from different sources, and John F. Kennedy. We are looking forward to learning about how to make an appeal, William Wilberforce, Martin Luther King, Jr, and how to state facts clearly and concisely.

Our favorite part of Persuasive Writing & Classical Rhetoric: Practicing the Habits of Great Writers are the profiles of great writers and speakers. Through their examples, Josh and I both learned how to hone our persuasive writing into an effective piece.
We are excited to continue!
