For this review, our family enjoyed Simply Music’s Music & Creativity – Foundation Course for free and you can as well. It is a completely free online piano lesson course offered to you to bring the enjoyment of music into your home!

What is Simply Music’s Music & Creativity – Foundation Course?

Simply Music is a “playing based” online piano instruction method rather than a “reading based “method. The playing based method teaches students to dive in and begin playing their instrument right away. This piano program does not teach students to read notes or count music. Rather, students are encouraged to listen to songs, find rhythms, explore different notes and beats, and improvise. Players are encouraged to practice improvisation while enjoying piano accompaniment. Through the process of discovery, a student’s love for the piano grows as their skills increase.

The Simply Music method teaches you to look at music in a three dimensional way. The instructions are non-technical, non-theoretical, and non-mathematical. Neil, the founder and instructor, uses familiar language, instructions, and concepts to explain the piano.

Simply Music does not focus on how to play, but on what to play. Students are given basic finger patterns to follow that they can repeat at different speeds in different locations on the keyboard in order to match particular songs that Simply Music has arranged and provided soundtrack files for. Students listen to the soundtracks through headphones as they play along on their pianos or keyboards to enhance the soundtrack music.

Simply Music teaches how to improvise accompaniment. This is not a program to teach students how to read notes or sheet music. Neil focuses on teaching students how to listen to a soundtrack of a song, then pick out a rhythm to match it and notes to compliment it, and play along with the soundtrack.

What is Included in Simply Music’s Music & Creativity – Foundation Course?

Along with the encouraging instruction, students also receive the online downloadable Foundation Reference Book, the downloadable book titled Music and the Art of Long Term Relationships, and downloadable soundtrack files to listen to while they are practicing and playing piano pieces.

Each online lesson is divided into smaller pieces so it is easy to repeat sections if students need to go back and re-watch the instruction. Parents are encouraged to help their children slow down and fully process each lesson completely before continuing to the next one. Each lesson builds upon the previous ones and each is an important step in the improvisation process.

Neil introduces the piano and vocabulary. He is encouraging and has such a peaceful manner about him that he is enjoyable to watch. You can tell that he loves what he does.

How did our family use Simply Music’s Music & Creativity – Foundation Course?

I worked through the course myself. I have taken traditional piano lessons in the past and was curious as to how Simply Music compared. I found the Simply Music method relaxing and enjoyable, easy to understand and easy to pick up.

The Quick Start lessons provide students with a way to begin at a faster pace if you are ready, but I feel more comfortable with a step-by-step approach, so I began with lesson 1.

I found that this program could really be helpful for students who want to play the piano yet have been frustrated by trying to read notes or who would like to learn to play in a more casual way. Because Simply Music begins with playing songs right away, students can make great gains quickly and stay interested.

I would like my students to learn to read notes, however, so they are able to pick up other instruments if they would like to. Also, at the end of the Simply Music program, I felt like I was prepared to only play the songs that Neal provided. I was still nervous to try other songs. That may just mean I need to spend more time building my confidence and experience. So that may be a personality thing and not a Simply Music issue. But it is something to consider as you evaluate the program for your children.

Overall, I recommend this program for its enjoyment and relaxation. I don’t see it as a stepping stone leading to concert piano solos, but it is a lovely way to enjoy creating musical art.
