Bishop Castle  Hot

For 40 years, Jim Bishop has been building a castle on a mountainside in central Colorado. "Did it all myself, don't want any help," he says mechanically as he unloads a pile of rocks that he's hoisted to the 70-foot level on one of the castle towers. Every year since 1969, Bishop has single-handedly gathered and set over 1000 tons of rock to create this stone and iron fortress in the middle of nowhere. Bishop calls it "a monument to hardworking people" and "America's biggest, one-man, physical project." "I always wanted a castle. Every man wants a castle," Bishop continues, his voice a broken record, answering the same questions he's obviously been asked thousands of times before. I-25, turn west at highway 165 going through Rye or Colorado City approximately 27 miles to Bishop Castle.

It's wonderful that Mr. Bishop opens the castle to the public for free (donations appreciated).
Educational Value
Educational Experience:  I visited this castle twice & once was about 10 years ago. It is a lifetime work-in-progress, so it is education from the perspective that you are watching the building process in an artistic way (not a mass produced structure). My son loved the dragon at the top of the chimney and both kids liked dancing on the large wood floor.
Educational Enhancement Ideas:  Ask your children:
-What would you like to build?
-Why would castles have moats?
-What holds the stones together?, etc.

Notes
Notes to next visitors:  It is quite a distance from Colorado Springs, so I would recommend going only if you are passing through Rye or want a long drive.
Glad we had, wish we had...:  A backpack carrier for toddlers- the stairs are steep and narrow, so I wouldn't let a really little one do it themselves.

It would have been fun to bring dress up clothes in a backpack, but my kids have fun pretended anyway.
